  • Mixed reality solutions (VR/AR)

Orientation programs (also known as on-boarding/and or induction) not only improve the rate at which employees are able to perform their jobs but also help employees satisfy their personal desires to feel they are part of the organisation's social fabric. In effect, it enables employees to be proud of where they will be working.

Orientation also provides critical information on the what/how/where of the employees role, therefore providing the springboard for the more technical aspects of their role and their health and safety responsibilities.

Using technology to deliver an orientation that is more immersive than PowerPoint enables new employees to fast track this knowledge. The workplace orientation should reflect the story of who the organisation is and how invested they are in the employee.

Experiential orientation training techniques include, hands-free immersive training and hand held devices enables users to be fully immersed and integrated in the culture, values and their employee role in a new organisation.

iPad/online digital orientation - can include AR component or filmed footage. Provides links to other employer apps/information. Can provide an overview of office/workplace for emergency evacuations.

Isonomic follow a robust design methodology to build your solution

Isonomic are experts in user design and training delivery. We have a partnership with OrbitVfx who have delivered several film products for NSW Government. We use the latest technology to delivery training; but also consider the budget and needs of the client. For some areas we will use our database of footage to deliver a product at a more reasonable price.

A sample of our design process for building orientations. The approach we will take will vary on the clients budget and required outcomes.

Our Partners OrbitVFX filmed and created the recruitment advert for John Holland. We use the same techniques for orientation solutions. We can film drone footage, onsite footage, interviews with workers and all scripting.

CASE STUDIES

Isonomic was tasked with building an immersive safety induction program for the Sydney Metro project. The required client outcomes were hands free, latest technology, immersive and covered all critical aspects of safety. Isonomic used their robust training methodology to build and end to end solution. This included leading user design working groups, filming, animation, scripting, solution build, solution testing, user feedback, final build, training to deploy solution and final deployment. This project took 10 months to complete.

Client feedback Project Director Terry Sleiman TSE Project, Sydney Metro Phase 2,

“From the minute we saw the potential of the HoloLens and augmented reality, we knew it would add tremendous value to workforce development and training on the project. We knew it was a risk, as it was new technology and the volume and the complexity of machinery we wanted featured in the mixed reality environment had never been done before. That’s what made it exciting, to pioneer the use of technology in a day-to-day working environment. Working with Isonomic on the solution was a breeze, they took control of the whole process and made sure they resolved any problems so that our tight delivery timeframes were met. The end result was amazing”

Small example of animation approach for safety induction training

We are unable to share detailed content of the solution due to an non disclosure agreement with the client, however we are able to share the animation approach we took, which was to build the first part as an overarching induction into the project, values and different stakeholders. A small part of the solution used an animated holographic Sydney map which was interactive and users wore a HoloLens to view the content.

Emerging technology for Technical Training use Augmented or Virtual Reality; the solution depending on the training need

What is mixed reality and how is it used for Technical Training?

Mixed Reality enhances traditional learning by superimposing digital information and the real world, enhancing what we see, and offering additional information for better comprehension.

For complex training, such as complicated machinery, using Mixed Reality provides an amazing opportunity to bring otherwise dry abstract content to life; enabling richer learning and collaboration.

Types of devices used in Mixed Reality training:

  1. Dynamic Augmented Reality training on iPhones/iPads

  2. Hands-free Augmented Training delivered using Google glasses or equivalent

  3. Hands-free Augmented Reality training delivered using HoloLens

Use Cases for Technical Training in Mixed Reality

Ideal use cases for Mixed Reality are industrial, manufacturing, and distribution; including operating and maintaining complex machinery. Retail environments also benefit from Mixed Reality solutions depending upon the problem being solved.

For items like RealWear customers such as Rio Tinto deploy them in their mines as a key knowledge management tool.

For the HoloLens are more sophisticated solution customers like John Holland, Qantas and Japan Airways are using them as training devices.

For education, Microsoft HoloLens will help make incredible leaps forward in productivity, collaboration, and innovation. In this instance the HoloLens is being used to educate medical students

The Evidence for Mixed Reality Training

A 2016 study carried out by Accenture Labs reviewed the efficacy of augmented reality instructions for procedural tasks. A random sample of users completed a Lego™ lighthouse set. There were three groups one group had augmented reality instructions, one had paper instructions and one had dynamic augmented reality instructions. The results provided evidence that groups dynamic augmented instructions carried out the task easier, quicker and more efficiently. What this means for organisations is that it is better to have the instructions when carrying out the task, rather than statically or on paper.

What type of training is best for a dynamic environment?

For on the job task technical training Virtual Reality is not a suitable option as the user is unable to see the outside environment they are working in.

Isonomic recommend that depending on the situation a combination of AR Kit, AR Glasses or Holographic Glasses (HoloLens) is used. Each option has different pricing and different capability.

HoloLens can be used on the job to enable workers to carry out maintenance tasks whilst remaining hands-free. Other hands-free AR devices include RealWear and Google Glasses; these devices have limitations in terms of seeing the actual environment.

Case Study - Technical Overview of Tunnel Boring Machine for John Holland TSE Project

As part of a project delivered for the Sydney Metro project for John Holland, Isonomic designed a technical overview of the Tunnel Boring Machine. Due to the size of the machine (3 x a jumbo jet) the design team from Isonomic progressively moved from a smaller holographic model to detailed larger size holograms; users are able to interact using hand, eye or voice gestures.

The module development required Isonomic to work with senior engineers, end users, safety experts and site managers on the working of the machine. Each detail had to represent a true lifelike augmentation of the machinery and work environment. The modules main purpose was an overview of the Tunnel Boring Machine, which included 30 minutes of holographic training material. End users have reported overwhelmingly positive feedback to what is normally paper based training. Due to the high quality of the work for the Tunnel Boring Machine, Isonomic were asked by the client to do a module on Mined Tunnels, which is a complex area to provide context and training in as it is underground and their is less training material available.

For this particular project Isonomic delivered ahead of schedule and met and exceeded all the quality parameters.

Isonomics Solution Design Approach for Technical Training

2019-05-27_18-23-00.jpg

Isonomic’s approach to developing technical training relies using a detailed methodology, including user back design to develop technical training solutions.

Working Groups are used to develop all aspects of the solution, including online working groups in Slack -where animation and content can be shared for sign off. Isonomic also users an Agile approach to solution delivery, so stage gate releases can be tested for usability and changes made. This makes the final delivery stage less likely to fail.

Costings - Cost depends upon the volume of animation and interaction. Isonomic work closely with the client to develop detailed storyboards (at a nominal cost) before final pricing is agreed to enable both parties to have a clear understanding of the statement of work. Isonomic is able to work on a solution based on the clients budget.

Hardware costings and features depend upon the solution required; Isonomic has a full breakdown of features and pricing of the high quality solutions which they take clients through before solutions are finalised.

Ongoing solution costs depending upon the volume of training or the program chosen for delivery there may be ongoing cost for cloud or application maintenance. For bespoke solutions Isonomic will work with you to remove monthly subscriptions so instead it can be managed in house. For some third party apps this may not be possible.

We build state of the art solutions for complex workplace problems; like bullying and harassment

We have built prototypes for virtual reality immersive training around workplace bullying and harassment. The solutions are based around the latest research, in conjunction with psychologists, and use cognitive behavioural training and empathy training. Bespoke elements are then built to reflect the clients work environment and particular scenarios. We partner with leading specialist animation studios in Australia to deliver solutions that fast track cultural change within your organisation.

Work Place bullying

We are not all aware of our impact on others,. Often we learn our behaviours through exposure to specific workplaces and behaviours that in the past may have been deemed as acceptable but are now not. What we do know is that workplaces with high amounts of conflict, create toxic environments, reducing productivity and increasing time away from work. To the tune of approximately 14.1billion dollars in costs to Australian businesses. So what do we do about it?

Isonomic have created an immersive virtual reality cognitive behavioural based modules and mirroring around workplace bullying.

Workplace Conflict Empathy Virtual Reality training aims at rewiring the cognitive response of  workers to workplace conflict, increasing empathy and ultimately decreasing conflict. Whilst this is delivered in VR it can also be built as an accompanying android/iPhone application to increase memory recall and emotional connection.

Use of Mirroring in Virtual Reality to create empathy

For Virtual Reality, “real scenarios” are able to be built that use a simulation of the body (embodiment) and the space surrounding it to evoke different embodiment simulations.  This is a new immersive approach to facilitating cognitive change within a lifelike virtual environment that can stimulate both the external (visual recognition) and internal (mind/body) of an individual immersed in the experience. This makes it an ideal toolkit for situations that are too dangerous of difficult to do “real” life training scenarios.  A meta-review, including meta analysis by Riva et al (September 2018) regarding the the use of VR for the treatment of mental health conditions found that embodiment and cognitive behaviourial training delivered in this environment was useful for treating conditions ranging from anxiety and eating disorders to psychosis and addiction

CASE STUDY - Office Bullying Mirroring Empathy Training

Isonomic has built a common bullying scenario, using a Mo-CAP specialist collaborator Electric Lens.

Isonomic worked with an existing client to develop a common bullying scenario, it was scripted, a storyboard drawn up, actor recruited and it was shot in the studio, then animated and rendered into the Oculus Rift headset. This enabled us to create an immersive animation experience which placed the person in a mirrored workplace environment.

Duration:  10-12 minute experience. This case study is available for demonstrations.

Final Training Design

We would use the same process to build real scenarios based on your workplace. With improvements in technology and kinetic cameras this type of experience is becoming more cost effective and accessible. Final experience would be modular but would not need to last more than 30 minutes.

Long Term Benefits:

  • Delivers rapid cultural change

  • Aims at creating cognition change for lasting individual benefits

  • Reduces requirement on role play or complex facilitated workshops.  Can be delivered anywhere in the world.

  • Once characters are built it is easy to adapt voice-overs for different scenarios and work environments. i.e. a desk can economically be replaced by a piece of machinery.

  • Can be used again and again over the years, i.e. the technology is unlikely to age.

In just ten minutes your employees will be

de-stressed and relaxed…

Let us take you deep into a redwood forest including the sights and sounds; with a guided experience designed to enable you to release stress from the body

Immerse yourself in a 10 minute psychology based virtual reality active relaxation experience; where both your mind, body and heart rate will be guided into a relaxed state of mind. Enabling you to get back to work or return to a place of calm when faced with stressful situations at work; whether it is workplace accidents or particular difficult work situations.

How does it work? We would set up a relaxation hub in your offices, including the headset, lap top and experience. Workers can be stood down or use the experience on their break guided by their managers, supervisors or voluntarily.

What is the price? You pay one price to rent the equipment and a monthly price to rent the experience. Not a price per user; which means the more you encourage use and increase volumes through the experience the more economical it becomes; i.e. cheaper than a cup of coffee per person.

Why is this different to other meditation experiences? We have built every aspect using research around sound, movement, colours, light and the environment; each aspect has been built by us, recorded and rendered into the experience; making it one of a kind for relaxation. This is also active; what this means is, you won’t fall asleep, instead you are encouraged to be active, but not too active in the environment; helping you reconnect, relax, de-stress but be able to rejoin work straight after.

the proof is in the experience - once you have tried it you will understand
